Mechanism of potentiating action of epinephrine on thiopental anesthesia.

چکیده
A number of papers have been presented in support of the concept that epinephrine potentiates barbiturate anesthesia in experimental animals (1-3). Recently, Mazel et al. (4) reported that epinephrine increased the brain level of barbital above controls and suggested that epinephrine may affect the permeability of the blood-brain barrier as well as other barriers. However, mechanism of the potentiating action of epinephrine on barbiturate anesthesia still remained to be elucidated. Meanwhile, Ohshika in our laboratory has reported that thiopental bound to plasma albumin can be displaced in vitro by a series of fatty acids (5) and further that anesthetic effect of thiopental was potentiated in rats or mice pretreated with sodium oleate. From a consideration of the results, he suggested the implication of plasma free fatty acids

Thiopental Sodium Anesthesia Following Premedication of Rabbits with Vitamin C
Rabbits are widely used as laboratory animals for experimental surgery. Anesthesia of rabbits may present complications unless the method is easy to apply and safe to use. In present study, effects of different dosages of vitamin C on thiopental sodium induced anesthesia in 25 male New Zealand white rabbits were studied. In the animals that had not received vitamin C treatment before thiopental...
متن کاملComparison of Duration of Spinal Anesthesia with Lidocaine or Lidocaine Plus Epinephrine between Addicts and Non-addicts
Background: Duration of spinal anesthesia depends on the type of anesthetic agent, dosage and additive materials such as epinephrine, ephedrine and opioid. We compared the duration of spinal anesthesia with lidocaine 5% with or without epinephrine in addict and non-addict patients undergoing inferior limb fracture surgery. Methods: This single blinded randomized clinical trial was performed on ...
متن کاملEvaluation of plasma levels of melatonin after midazolam or sodium thiopental anesthesia in children.
Midazolam and sodium thiopental are two commonly used drugs in anesthesia for minor surgical procedures in children. A relationship exists between benzodiazepines (BNZ), barbiturates and melatonin. Whereas these drugs increase pineal melatonin production, the indoleamine amplifies the effects of both BNZ and barbiturates on the central nervous system (CNS). Our purpose was thus to analyze the p...
متن کاملTHE DILEMMA OF HEMODYNAMIC INSTABILITY DURING INDUCTION OF ANESTHESIA: CAN MIDAZOLAM SERVE AS A SUITABLE SUBSTITUTE FOR THIOPENTONE?
Both midazolam and thiopental sodium are being used as induction agents and for maintenance of anesthesia. In contrast to other benzodiazepines such as diazepam, midazolam has a rapid onset of action and fast distribution and causes few cardiovascular or respiratory effects. Being water soluble, midazolam is also associated with a low incidence of venous irritation. The purpose of this stu...
